Project Description

We are proud to announce that Arwen Malavong has been awarded the Innovative Feasibility and Environmental Conservation Award for her inspiring project that upcycles discarded plastic bottles into practical and affordable flotation devices.

With global thermoplastic production projected to reach nearly 590 million metric tons by 2050 and only 9% of plastic currently recycled, the environmental crisis caused by plastic pollution continues to worsen. Single-use plastic bottles alone number over 500 billion consumed annually, with only a fraction properly recycled, contributing significantly to landfill overflow and ocean pollution.

Arwen’s project addresses this critical issue by creatively repurposing these abundant plastic bottles—often found as litter in communities—into rafts designed for flood situations, which are increasingly frequent due to climate change. By connecting bottles in horizontal or vertical arrangements, her design creates flotation devices suitable for one or multiple people. The low material cost (about $15 for connectors) and community-based assembly make this solution highly feasible and scalable.

Beyond its immediate practical use, the project serves as an educational tool to raise awareness about plastic pollution and its impacts. Its simplicity allows replication in schools, local organizations, or independent workshops, especially in flood-prone regions.

This award recognizes the remarkable combination of environmental conservation through waste reduction and the real-world feasibility of creating life-saving devices that communities can build themselves. Arwen’s innovation exemplifies sustainable problem-solving with lasting impact.

We congratulate Arwen Malavong on this outstanding achievement and commend her dedication to turning plastic pollution into practical solutions for safer communities.
